Photograph I took during bows of the Sunday night performance, from the control room.

During an inspiring weekend at the Regent Theatre, late June of 2024, I undertook work experience, shadowing crew members for the musical “Wicked”. This provided valuable insight into the technical elements of theatre. Over the course of four shows, I shadowed various production roles that collectively worked together to create this magnificent show.

I first shadowed the stage right stage manager observing their coordinated track. I had the opportunity to follow a cue book for an act, which was a really interesting experience, trying to keep up with the complex calls in real time.

I then shadowed one of the dressers responsible for two male ensemble tracks. I was lucky to assist with this swift and precise track in their bunker underneath the stage as well as in the wings. This role provided the most cast involvement. I gained insight into how performers feel and respond during a show.

Throughout this incredible weekend, I also had the opportunity to shadow the sound engineers in the sound box for one show. It was fascinating to see firsthand how they mix the sound in real time. Seeing these roles in action strengthened my appreciation for the many technical roles involved in a show.

During the last show I stood with the follow spot operators, observing their detailed tracks. I was also able to play with one of the follow spots prior to this show, which was great fun!

I was on coms during the entirety of this four show weekend giving me insight into sm calls, team members communication and tech requests throughout the show.

Overall, the experience of shadowing these diverse roles at “Wicked”, was a valuable opportunity that not only deepened my technical understanding but also confirmed my desire to pursue a future in this exhilarating industry.
